<image:caption>Fresh Ulmus pumila bark being dried in bundles perfect for a 1 quart infusion. To get the most bang for your buck mucilage-wise, the bark extracts best in cold infusions. Hot infusions work just fine too, but you’ll tend to get a bit more in the way of the tannic aspects of the outer bark. Not a big deal, but the tea will be darker, and have a little more of an astringent effect, along with the demulcent, moistening aspect.</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is one that grows just about everywhere, from plains to way, way up there in the alpine zone (though perhaps a bit more hesitantly than it does in the lowlands). It likes a good bit of sun, but I've seen it growing happily in the dappled shade of a Ponderosa Pine forest. Contrary to what its lush, fern-like foliage might imply, it also prefers more nutrient poor and rather cruddy soil (cruddy being the technical soil science term for the stuff that many other plants prefer not to grow in).</image:caption>

<image:caption>Canadian Lousewort, also called Wood Betony or Pedicularis canadensis, is one of our local CT louseworts. As with many other flowers of this genus, the top petal (called the galea, in this case) is far more noticeable. Looking like a mini-pirates hook, it ranges from pale yellow to light purple. Crazy, indecisive flowers:)</image:caption>

<image:caption>This is a Colorado native, Pedicularis groenlandica. A bit different to our native New England pedicularis, this one is called Elephants Head, or even cuter, Elephantella. Look closely and you'll notice the top petal (that galea again) makes a perfect pink elephants head and trunk, with the other petals making up the ears. Along with being one of the more spectacular flowers I've ever seen, it also makes a delightfully relaxing tincture. As soon as I get my teleporter working I won't need to be so stingy with the tincture I have left of this...:)</image:caption>
