Wild Plants in Cultivated Places
Come learn about the wild edible and medicinal plants that surround our farms, gardens, and community spaces with herbalist Kat Mackinnon. We will be exploring the wonderful Three Leaf Farm along Coal Creek in Lafayette!
Along with botanical identification, we’ll be digging into medicinal uses, ecology, harvesting, poisonous plants, wild edible plant recipes, and more! We’ll also explore using the senses to identify plant constituents, and how to read the landscape to find your wild foods and medicines.
This class is rain or shine, so come with rain gear and layers! Bring a notebook and pencil, and a reusable cup for coffee :)

Herbal Support for Menstrual Health
Join Kat Mackinnon for an evening of exploring herbal allies to support a balanced menstrual cycle.
We’ll discuss how to work with herbs to support overall cycle health, while giving special attention to remedies that ease cramping, bleeding, reduce bloating, and support the mental and emotional shifts that can arise before and during menstruation.

We’ll be learning about the buds, fruits, leaves, and barks that help with identifying these massive medicinal species. As we go we’ll talk about medicine making, ecology, caretaking techniques, mythology and other topics inspired by the plant people.

Herbal Immune Support
When the sniffles, aches, and coughs of cold and flu season arrive, having the right herbal allies can make all the difference. In this class, we’ll explore a variety of immune-supportive herbs and how to work with them in everyday, accessible ways.
We’ll cover how to strengthen immunity, working with herbs and practices that help support resilience in the system before illness strikes. We will also cover how to soothe the uncomfortable, acute symptoms of common respiratory infections, as well as ways to support recovery.
Whether you’re brand-new to herbal remedies or looking to deepen your seasonal wellness toolkit, you’ll leave with practical recipes, preparation methods, and an understanding of how to choose the right herbs for your needs.

Herbs for Pain and Tension
Join Certified Herbalist Kat Mackinnon for an in-depth class on working with local herbs to relieve pain.
In this class, we’ll explore herbal options for pain management, with a focus on native medicinals growing in the Southwest and Colorado in particular. We'll taste herbs and try topical remedies, as well as learn the basics of harvesting and making medicine. We’ll also discuss herb/drug interactions, as well as options for integrating herbs with other therapeutics, such as bodywork and nutrition.

Coil Basketry Workshop
Coil basketry is a global technique, seen in ancient European bee skeps and American West pine needle baskets. This hands-on class focuses on materials specific to the Southwest, covering their collection, processing, and various coiling styles. You’ll learn practical weaving techniques to create functional baskets—from watertight rock boil vessels to durable gathering containers. You’ll take home both a handmade basket and the foundational skills to continue crafting on your own.

Primal Fire Workshop
Come learn the ancient art of making fire from scratch - no matches, no lighters, just your hands, tools and a spark of determination!
In this hands-on class, we’ll explore two primal methods for creating fire, bow drill and hand drill. Whether you’re brand new to friction fire, or have dabbled before and want to deepen your skills, this class offers an accessible, supportive space to learn, practice, and connect with these timeless skills.
Along with teaching you the techniques for making fire, we’ll cover everything from material selection and how to build your own fire-making kits. You’ll have time nto practice and play with a few techniques, and leave with an understanding of how to coax a coal from simple natural materials.
Come ready to get your hands dirty, and experience making fire through the old ways.

Splint Basketry Workshop
This hands-on class will give you the skills to create a variety of patterns, and introduce you to working with several types of natural materials. Each participant will go home with a completed berry basket, as well as the knowledge of how to gather and process your own basket making supplies for the future.
This class is appropriate for the beginner to intermediate adult weavers - join us for a fun and challenging workshop!

Spring Field Botany with Mountain Herbalism
Our classes are hands-on outdoor adventures. You will learn the skills of plant ID, ethical wildcrafting, herbalism, and medicine-making through direct personal experience. The program consists of field classes where we will travel to the different Rocky Mountain ecosystems within driving distance of Denver. The material learned in the field will be supported by evening lectures where we can cover herbal topics more suited to a classroom environment.
Graduates of our program will have the skills to identify, locate, harvest and process medicinal and edible plants of the Rocky Mountains.

Forest to Field Festival
An immersive weekend festival reviving the innate lessons of Earth and creating a link between the deep slow wisdom of the wild forest, to the nourishing relationship between humans and the land they cultivate.
Participants, tiny and tall, will explore what it is to be a human close to the land with classes on ancestral skills, animal tending, herbalism, foraging, medicine and craft making, sustainable living, and more.
Hone in on the lost traditions our ancestors have woven between humans and nature. Take the time to slow down with like-minded community that values the importance of preserving our lineages and the Earth.

This is a 3-day intensive course that dives into plant identification, herbal medicine making & outdoor skills and includes a 6-hour online module preceding the on-site course. There is an option for assignments and certification.
In this intensive, you’ll learn the fundamentals of plant identification, including botanical terminology, plant family pattern recognition, and ecology. We’ll also cover wild foods, medicinal plant uses, wild-crafting ethics, sustainable harvesting methods, in-the-field medicine making techniques and plant preservation.
As part of connecting to the plants and landscape, we’ll also be working with fire-making skills, including how to make fire by friction using materials from the land.
This hands-on workshop is designed to cultivate your connection and build your confidence in identifying and working with medicinal plants.

Field Botany with Mountain Herbalism
Spring and Summer Courses, Denver Area
Our classes are hands-on outdoor adventures. You will learn the skills of plant ID, ethical wildcrafting, herbalism, and medicine-making through direct personal experience. The program consists of field classes where we will travel to the different Rocky Mountain ecosystems within driving distance of Denver. The material learned in the field will be supported by evening lectures where we can cover herbal topics more suited to a classroom environment.
Graduates of our program will have the skills to identify, locate, harvest and process medicinal and edible plants of the Rocky Mountains.
We keep classes small and will accept 8-12 students per group each year. We believe in a collaborative teaching model, and will have 2 teachers on every field trip. No previous experience in herbalism or botany is required.

Spring Edible and Medicinal Plant Walk
This class covers botanical identification, medicinal applications, ecology, harvesting techniques, poisonous plant awareness, recipes using wild edible plants, and more.

Plant Camp - Connecticut
This course is a hands-on intensive with emphasis on plant identification, learning plant family similarities, and gaining awareness of local ecology. Designed to give you confidence in your future foraging endeavors with skillful instruction on how to avoid poisonous look-alikes, and how to feel comfortable knowing common edible and medicinal plants. We'll also introduce you to herbalism skills, and how to work with medicinal plants for common ailments.
This summer workshop is centered around the ancestral skills, and elemental workings of earth and fire. You’ll learn how to start a fire and other fire building skills, including coal burning, carving wood spoons, and primal cooking methods. We’ll be getting our hands into the soil with seed starting, plant cuttings,, and other methods for growing your own native plant medicine.
We’ll also be visiting a 350 year old family farm, still growing edible, medicinal, and ornamental plants, and learning from Nancy Ballek Mackinnon, local horticultural expert and author.
Cost: $765-850 includes 2 wild foods dinners and camping for the intensive
